Help
To all you geeks out there, i need recommendations to upgrade my freaking old com with minimal expenditure.
Motherboard: Gigabyte 965P-S3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86Ghz
RAM: Geil PC800 (512MB x 2) Kit
Memory: Hitachi 160GB SATA2 harddisk
Gfx card: Leadtek 7600GT 256MB PCIE
Power: 300W
I intend to change my RAM and Gfx card. I dun really need a major upgrade, as long as it's just enough to support current games like COD6 and stuff. I dun like it when i experience frame lag. =( Also, i'm a noob when it comes to computer hardware. So please explain to me why i need to change also. I wanna learn.... =) Thanks in advance.

Re: Help
Definately want to change your graphics card la, 7600GT is how old liao lol. Uhh since your motherboard already PCI express then should be quite good, i think at the moment the ATI cards are outperforming the NVDIA ones, so you might want to look at the new range of ATI cards. If you're a little more money conscious might i suggest the HD4870? if not then i think the HD 4890 should be a pretty good card to get for its price lah.
As for RAM you'll need to check what your motherboard supports and im too lazy to google but it looks like DDR2 i think, so again should be straight forward la, go get another GB of RAM at least.

Re: Help
yupp as mentioned i think an additional 2GB RAM STICK and a ATI Radeon(any from 4000 series depending on budget) gfx card would be considered minimal upgrades liao. Not sure abt power supply though. Anything else like upgrading ur processor speed wldnt be considered 'minimal' liao. Where blood. Blood and Ace come give advice!!

Re: Help
Haha i dont know anything bout comps okay. The only thing i know is graphic card. Get ATI, its smooth running lah. My prev graphic card is GeForce 8800, kind of choppy if ping are higher than 60 even though the graphics are good. For ATI, idk which is mine bt even my ping quite high, the frames are smooth...strange things eh

Re: Help
hello all!
driz: what's your budget first? #1 tip: get a solid PSU first. a PSU should be the first thing when you all invest in a new setup or upgrading cause a solid PSU can guarantee much better performance. your PSU 300W cannot support higher end cards for sure, doubt it can even support the 46XX or 48XX. so i would recommend you upgrade your psu first, andyson is highly recommended, a new psu of about 450W above shld be sufficient for a lower end GFX.
IMHO, it's much more worth it to overhaul your current setup soon (i know $$ doesn't really permits you) cause it's not worth it to upgrade a few parts as it'll still be a bottleneck. it's only a short term solution if you change your GFX and RAM.
my 2cents!

clearwater: eat shit and die.
sumako: chim leh. i com noob, i dun even know wad is wad.
destiny: thanks. i know 300W is damn low for a com. barely making it. was thinking of getting about 650W to save the trouble of thinking so much.

Re: Help
you tell me your budget? i help to try to set up a simple rig from hwz recommendations. 650W may be overkill, it's not the power output but how efficient, there's different classes of PSU nowadays.

Re: Help
muahwhaha buy new com again loll.
looks like its $$ again il want to get a new com too buy i think the $200 i spent ( $173 for ati4830 and $37 for Geil 2GB) can last me for another good 2 years. $100 upgrade per year for an otherwise problemless performance does mi justice =) Of cos it might change when bfbc2 comes out but til then, my com not a single major prob for any of the games up til codWAW.

Re: Help
1.3k is not a small budget already lor. i got my rig 2+ years ago for around that much, now it's probably worth just half of what i paid back then. any preference for your gfx? ATI and NVIDIA in my opinion are almost the same, the difference is probably insignificant since the rig is not the most high end. AMD will be cheaper than Intel also. so it depends on what you want, 1.3-1.5k can play around quite a lot so can save on some stuff and maybe invest in something better also.
AMD Phenom II X4 925 & ASUS M4A77TD PRO $348
WD Caviar Green 1TB $125
OCZ/Corsair 2X2GB 1333 CL9 78X2 = $156
Andyson 80+ 650W $119 (3 Years Warranty)
Samsung DVD+RW SATA $32
HD4890 $299 (depending on which brand you like, generally almost the same)
Windows 7 Home Premium $170
CM 690 $139
This is quite a basic setup, damage is under $1400. i went along with AMD so maybe you can pump in more for your gfx. i decided on 4890 cuz the newer models support up to DirectX 11 which is not really mainstream now so i would rather you invest in a good casing and PSU. these 2 components are actually very important when you consider future upgrades. Above prices all taken from Fuwell pricelists. i'm assuming here that you're using your old peripherals so i didn't include the most important monitor.

alamak! i so long never come in liao. u pple got miss me not? hahaha
anw, i think destiny rec is solid maybe can get WD black. more performance. and good time to get a 5850 at 399. but if too much, 4870 is more than enough. PSU dont know much but think seasonic is good?
